The first release from the new range of Mortlach single malts is the Mortlach Rare Old, which comes from a mixture of Sherry and bourbon casks. Those familiar with Mortlach through the Flora and Fauna release might know Mortlach as a bit of a Sherry monster, but this new bottling brings to light a complex, warming and spicy side of Mortlach's personality.
Morlach Rare Old is produced at the first legal distillery from Speyside's spiritual heartland of Dufftown, founded in 1823. Mortlach has been described by whisky connoisseurs as "The Beast of Dufftown" for its rich, complex, powerful and flavoursome character. A personality notably shaped by an unusual distillation system and excellence in casks selection.
Three different distillation processes are running in parallel at Mortlach. Some of the new make spirit will have gone through more than 2 distillations and some of it more than three. Commentators have attempted to explain this astonishingly complicated and unique method as '2.81 Distilled'.
